The project is located near the famous Prince Gong's residence, in a Hutong neighborhood characterized by small houses and scarce green spaces. The residents' need for a larger living room and back garden inspired the designers to convert the upper and lower floors into a community living room and garden respectively. The result is a multi-functional space that serves as a coffee shop, shared office, art space, and lounge for the elderly.
The Hutong Neighborhood Complex stands out for its unique approach to urban renewal. The designers have successfully integrated a variety of functions into the old house, injecting new vitality into the Hutong life. The first floor, known as the 'big living room in Hutong', is seen by residents as an extension of their homes. The second floor, or 'back garden in the alley', uses movable plant boxes to divide the space according to functional requirements. Regularly, artists are invited to create works for the frontage art window, adding a dynamic artistic element to the space.
The project was realized using low-cost, environmentally friendly materials that align with the characteristics of the Hutong district. A notable design feature is the glass wall, which displays a map of the Qianlong period in Beijing. An ultra-fine linear light belt flows along the top surface to the wall, creating a sense of time flowing. This juxtaposition of traditional elements and modern technology gives the old house a unique appeal.
The Hutong Neighborhood Complex serves as a model for urban micro renewal. It demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform an old house into a vibrant community hub, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The project has been recognized for its innovative approach, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.
In conclusion, the Hutong Neighborhood Complex is more than just a building; it's a symbol of community, culture, and renewal. It's a place where the old meets the new, where tradition blends with innovation, and where every corner tells a story. It's a testament to the power of design to transform spaces, communities, and lives.
